Wild Salmon Caravan Art Build at The Main Artery+Potluck (2017)

Come create art for the Wild Salmon Caravan (WSC). All artistic abilities are warmly welcome! Materials provided. This is a FREE family friendly event!!!! Make felt/plaster masks, costumes, banners, bubbles, friends, chalk art, all the creative things! +++ POTLUCK dinner!!

WHAT?
What is your salmon story?!!!
Through storytelling and artistic creation, EVERYONE (yes you!) is invited to share their salmon story, and prepare for the fun, fierce and fabulous parade that is the WSC (https://www.facebook.com/wildsalmoncaravan/). For those with deep ancestral bonds to the Salmon, this is an opportunity to celebrate that connection; for others newer to these shores, to inspire connection to these sacred creatures. This is the LAST art build at the Main Artery before the Caravan in October! Come make your mark, share stories, songs and sillyness. Everyone is invited to bring a dish to share for our potluck.

WHEN?
September 17th 2017, 4-8pm.
6423 Main Street

WHY?
The Wild Salmon Caravan is a grassroots celebration of the spirit of wild salmon that spans Coast Salish territory (Stó:lõ, Vancouver, Fraser Valley), the Interior Salish (Nlaka’pamux, St’at’imc, Secwepemc/Kamloops, Adams Lake/Chase), Dakelh, Tsilqot’in, and northern communities. The WSC is all inclusive, mobilizing people of all cultures through the expression of arts and culture. It aims to bring together the Rainbow Nation (people of all creeds and cultures) to educate, inform, and transform the darkness surrounding the industrial storm that is endangering wild salmon. It strives to balance out imbalances in privilege and power – strengthening Indigenous voices, vision and leadership. The Wild Salmon Caravan works towards Truth and Reconciliation by building trust in cross cultural relationships. Following the grassroots leadership of the Working Group on Indigenous Food Sovereignty (WGIFS), and the Salish Council of Matriarchs, the Wild Salmon Caravan is an experience of transcendence out of the old structures and adversarial ways of Indigenous and non-Indigenous relations.

WHO?
The Main Artery, established in 2005, is a collective of creative types who share a home on the Unceded ancestral territory of the Coast Salish people including the xʷməθkwəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish) and Səl̓ílwətaʔ (Tsleil-Waututh), also known as South Vancouver. We are very excited to be hosting this event and getting to meet you all! EVERYONE (including/especially LGBTQ2S+) is invited to create, participate and celebrate the Wild Salmon. This event is sponsored by small neighbourhood grants and the Vancouver Foundation.

HOW?
The event takes place right in front of the Main Artery on main street and on the second floor of the collective. There are wheelchair accessible bathrooms available at Roots Café on 49th and Main until their closing time at 5pm. There are also accessible bathrooms at Sunset Community Center on 51st and Main .
