The Wild Salmon Caravan (WSC) is being planned for June 6 to June 11, 2016, and will engage communities in caravan style parades, and arts and cultural events where ancient salmon ceremonies and songs will call the wild salmon home to the rivers and streams where they have played out their lives in birth and death since time immemorial. We invite you to join us when we travel from the headwaters of the Fraser River at Mount Robson to the Salish Seas. We are calling on artists, clowns, Indigenous peoples, farmers and people of all cultures to come out in creative expressions of our love for wild salmon.

Support for the Wild Salmon Caravan 2016 comes from a mutual aid network of partners that contribute in the following ways; staff time (planning, hosting and coordinating, logistics on site), meeting space, art supplies, promotion, transportation, and cash (in person donations from community fundraising activities).
Some project partners include: Still Moon Arts Society, Britannia Community Centre, Vancouver Parks Board, First Nations Health Authority, BC Food Systems Network, Working Group on Indigenous Food Sovereignty, Kamloops Food Policy Council, United Church, Adams Lake Indian Band, and other Indigenous bands and tribal councils.
We greatly appreciate the support received thus far, however there is a need to raise additional funds. You can become a part of the Wild Salmon Caravan Mutual Aid Network by donating to help cover the cost of artists’ participation, and ensure that cost is not a barrier to low income people without the means to travel in the caravan.
By contributing financially to this journey you are not only promoting the conservation of Wild Salmon, but also increasing the chances of survival of many other beings who rely on them for food.
Our goal is to raise enough money to rent two utility vans to travel from Vancouver to Mount Robson and back, to carry banners, posters, and supplies, and one van to carry helpers and volunteers. We are also seeking contributions to provide honoraria to the artists who are often the most underpaid sector in the economy.
It’s time to start creating your banners, flags, posters, music, storytelling activities, regalia, and decorating your vehicles and bicycles for the parade!
The Salmon Will Hear Our Songs
For thousands of years, the wild salmon have been our most important Indigenous food. They are a cultural and ecological keystone species in the Pacific and Inland temperate rainforests, and are an indicator of the health and integrity of the Indigenous land and food system. They feed the bears, the wolves, the eagles, the soil, the trees, and our families and communities.
Indigenous communities are critically concerned about the declining health and abundance of wild salmon and are working together to nurture the creative energy that will inspire, educate, inform, and transform the darkness surrounding the industrial storm that is endangering them.
Following the leadership of Sto’lo Elder, Eddie Gardener, and Dawn Morrison Secwepemc, Founder/Director of the Working Group on Indigenous Food Sovereignty, the 2nd Wild Salmon Caravan (WSC) will bring deeper meaning and understanding to truth and reconciliation by bringing together people of all cultures to raise awareness of the ecological and social importance of wild salmon.
